Academia Hispano Maya offers interested tourists a qualified teacher, warm homestay experience, volunteer opportunities, daily activities, and hikes into the surrounding Cuchumatanes Mountains. Classes provide a time to study Spanish as well as to learn about local culture and history from the school's teachers. Lessons take place daily, Monday to Friday, from 2:00 to 7:00PM. The school can also accomodate students interested in studying fewer hours.
Each day, classes break for a half hour, giving students a chance to mingle with teachers and students, and enjoy coffee, tea and a locally prepared snack. Our teachers are experienced and qualified to instruct all levels of Spanish, and interested students can opt to study Mam, the local Mayan language.

Mission:
Lack of education is one of the primary causes of poverty. People who cannot read or write have very little chance of improving their situation, and no chance of struggling effectively against an unjust system.
In Guatemala, and particularly in the highland town of Todos Santos Cuchumatan, illiteracy is endemic; the illiteracy rate in Guatemala is 31%. This is one of the highest illiteracy rates of any Central American country, and the problem is worse for women and children, especially among the various indigenous cultures.
One third of all girls in Guatemala do not attend primary school; only 13% of children in Todos Santos from primary school carry on to middle school; 77% of indigenous people are illiterate; and the illiteracy rate for indigenous women in some rural areas approaches 90%.
For this reason, Hispanomaya strives to provide scholarships for children who would otherwise likely drop out of school to help provide income for their families.
